A new silicone product rarely moves in a straight line from sketch to shipment. The most successful projects are usually the ones in which the buyer and manufacturer agree on the productโs purpose, constraints and approval process before tooling begins.
This roadmap explains the typical stages we discuss with buyers at Yobonjee. It is not a promise that every project will follow the same calendar. Product complexity, testing requirements, tooling changes, packaging and order volume all affect the final plan. The value of a roadmap is that it makes the next decision visible.
Stage 1: Turn the idea into a usable brief
โWe need a silicone kitchen productโ is a starting point, but it is not yet a manufacturing brief. Before discussing a mold, define who will use the item, what problem it solves and where it will be sold. A pet travel product, a baby feeding item and a kitchen storage accessory may use similar materials but require very different design and compliance discussions.
- Target user and intended use
- Approximate dimensions and capacity
- Reference images, sketches or an existing sample
- Preferred hardness, color and surface feel
- Expected sales market and relevant test standard
- Logo, packaging and target order quantity
If some details are unknown, say so. A clear โnot decided yetโ is more useful than an assumption that later becomes a tooling change.
Stage 2: Design and manufacturing review
The next step is to review whether the concept can be molded reliably. Wall thickness, deep undercuts, parting lines, draft angles, sealing areas and assembly points can all influence appearance, performance and production stability. This is also the right time to consider how the user will clean, carry or store the product.
For an original design, a 3D file allows a more precise review. For a modification of an existing item, identify exactly which dimensions or functions must change. Stage 3: Quote the complete product, not only the silicone part
A meaningful quotation needs a stable scope. Material grade, product weight, number of cavities, color changes, printing, logo treatment, assembly, individual packaging and carton requirements can all affect cost. Freight and third-party testing should also be identified separately rather than hidden inside an uncertain unit price.
At this stage, compare quotations by scope instead of comparing one number. Confirm what the tooling fee includes, who owns the mold, how revisions are handled and whether the quoted unit price assumes one color or several.
Stage 4: Tooling and first samples
Once the design and commercial scope are approved, tooling can begin. Changes after this point may require mold modification, so the final drawing should be checked carefully. Critical dimensions, capacity, sealing surfaces and logo position deserve particular attention.
The first sample is a learning tool, not merely a color sample. Check fit, function, odor, surface finish, flash, deformation, assembly and cleaning. If the product works with a lid, container, bottle or another component, test the complete set. Stage 5: Freeze an approved sample
Feedback such as โmake it betterโ is difficult to apply. Record comments by item: dimension, color, function, appearance and packaging. When the sample is accepted, keep a signed reference or a written approval record with photos and revision numbers. This becomes the standard for production inspection.
The safest time to solve a product problem is before mass production, while the cost of changing direction is still controlled.
Stage 6: Pilot run, production and inspection
For a new or technically sensitive product, a pilot quantity may reveal issues that a few hand-selected samples do not show. Production consistency depends on controlled material preparation, molding parameters, trimming, post-processing, assembly and packing.
Before shipment, the inspection plan should reflect the productโs real risks. Typical checks include quantity, workmanship, critical dimensions, color, logo, function, packaging and carton marks. Market-specific laboratory testing should be arranged according to the intended use and destination; requirements should be confirmed rather than assumed.
How buyers can keep the project moving
- Nominate one person to consolidate design feedback.
- Use revision numbers for drawings and packaging files.
- Separate โmust-haveโ requirements from preferences.
- Approve physical samples against a written checklist.
- Do not order printed packaging until the product and dimensions are stable.
- Leave time for validation instead of building the launch date around a best-case sample.
